Searching for opportunities using Filter Options – it is best to leave the defaults mostly blank.

Search using Duty Location Search:

The most basic option is to filter Duty Location by “within state” to return a manageable list of positions.  To return positions within a particular State, select the “within state” option, and select a state from the drop-down list

Keep in mind that the geographic location of the duty locations is estimated and does not necessarily represent their actual location.

Search using Type of position:

As someone who holds a Direct Hire Certificate from the RA Program, you are eligible for Permanent, Term, and Temporary or Seasonal – but not Temporary Detail positions, and likely not Fire positions unless you hold certain qualifications.  You may also be eligible for Bargaining Unit Type of Positions.

To help narrow down the search, you could also select the Grade from the drop-down feature but it may be difficult to know specifically what grade you qualify.  With a Bachelor degree you will likely need to enter federal service as a 5, 6 or 7.  With a Master degree you may be able to begin as a 7, 8 or 9 Grade.  Anything 11 or higher will likely be out of your reach unless you have a PhD or more specialized experience and have served at least one year at a lower Grade level and worked your way up the ladder.

Once you select one or two options from the search filter and leaving most all options blank, click the “Perform Search” button in the lower left for a list of opportunities currently being advertised.  Once you know the Series number of positions you might qualify for, you could also use that feature as your beginning search criteria.  The trick is to not refine the search too much and only select one or two filters.

View On Map option:

After entering your desired filter criteria, select “View on Map” to show results on a map.  Results are grouped by duty location and displayed using push-pins.  Each pin displays the number of results for the duty location.  By selecting the pin, a small information box displayed with the name of the duty location (city/state), and links to view the notices.  There is a limit of 100 results displayed on the map, so you may need to adjust the filter criteria to refine the search and display the results desired.
